The number of victims is growing. The health authorities announced this Tuesday afternoon the death of one person from food poisoning, while eight others were hospitalized, seven of them in intensive care, in Gironde and Ile-de-France. They all became ill after eating at a restaurant in Bordeaux between September 4 and 10.
According to the General Directorate of Health (DGS), these patients were part of a group of “10 cases clinically suggestive of dietary botulism.” This “rare but serious neurological disease” develops “in preserves that have not gone through an extensive sterilization process: sausages, sausages or even preserves of family or artisanal origin,” the Regional Health Agency (ARS) said this Tuesday morning. ) of New Aquitaine.
“In all cases, sardines were consumed in jars made by the restaurateur,” adds the DGS.
A call for vigilance
The authorities also indicated: “The occurrence of other cases, in the coming days, linked to this establishment is not excluded.”
A little earlier, the ARS stressed that, given the incubation time that can range from a few hours to a few days, health facilities are “called to be extremely vigilant.”
“People who have frequented this Bordeaux establishment are called upon to be extremely vigilant and to consult in case of symptoms,” the statement advises.
Analysis is currently being carried out by the National Botulism Reference Center “for biological confirmation of botulism” in the Bordeaux cases.
