This Monday the seasonal vaccination reinforcement campaign against Covid-19 begins. Due to a stronger than expected resumption of the epidemic, this was brought forward by two weeks, although it was due to start on October 17 at the same time as the flu vaccination.
It is no coincidence that the two campaigns began simultaneously. The High Health Authority considers that the joint administration of the two vaccines can help reinforce vaccination coverage of the general population. Simply because it avoids having to travel twice. But can we really get vaccinated at the same time without contraindications?
“Concomitant administration of a Covid-19 vaccine booster and a seasonal flu vaccine is possible as long as a person is eligible for both vaccineswhatever the age”, establishes the HAS as the only condition.
A shot in each arm
According to an explanatory note from the Ministry of Health, the two vaccinations can be carried out “at the same time at two separate vaccination points.”
“A vaccine will be injected into each arm,” Philippe Besset, president of the Federation of French Pharmaceutical Unions (FSPF), tells BFMTV.com.
“There is no waiting period to respect” between the Covid vaccine and the flu vaccine, the ministry also emphasizes. AND This specificity applies to the flu vaccine, but also to all others..
In summary, a person who goes to a pharmacy to get vaccinated starting October 17 can ask to be injected with both products in a single visit, if they are available. The injections will be given in one arm and then the other. And, if a person wants to separate the two visits from her, she does not have to wait any set period of time.
Recommended appointment
Due to the packaging of the Covid-19 vaccine, Philippe Besset recommends booking an appointment for both vaccines to avoid possible waste.
Vaccination against both diseases is not only possible. It is highly recommended for vulnerable people. To simplify things, a vaccine could be available that combines protection against both diseases. It does not exist “to date”, indicates the Ministry of Health.
