The dengue epidemic continues to advance in Martinique, where three people have died since September 18, including a child, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced on Thursday night. The ARS, which cites Santé Publique France in its press release, indicates that these three deaths are “directly attributable to dengue after a collegiate medical examination.”

Among these three victims, a nine-year-old boy, resident in the town of Anses-d’Arlet, in the south of the island, died this week after several days of hospitalization, according to the mayor of the municipality, Eugène Larcher. .

More than 1000 cases per week

“We have created a psychological listening unit,” the elected official told AFP. “We also alerted the ARS to go to the site to identify larval breeding sites and be able to eradicate these mosquitoes.”

For several weeks now, the municipalities in southern Martinique, including Anses-d’Arlet, have had one of the highest incidence rates in the overseas territory, with a prevalence of 100 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, according to the latest weekly Health bulletin. Public of France. .

According to this same source, last week the symbolic threshold of 1,000 weekly cases was exceeded on the Caribbean island of 352,000 inhabitants. “Since the beginning of the epidemic, 13 serious cases have been recorded, of which six have died,” indicates the ARS.
