The administrative investigation opened after the death at the end of October of a schoolboy who felt unwell and then fell after being vaccinated against the papillomavirus near Nantes, did not identify any “dysfunction in the organization of the vaccination campaign” , states the Regional Health Agency. (ARS) in a press release published this Friday, November 24. The ARS regrets a “dramatic accident.”
A “sharp drop” after vaccination
“The investigation does not reveal any dysfunction in the organization of the vaccination campaign, in the preparation of the Federal Center for Prevention and Detection (CFPD 44), (…) nor in the distribution and provision of the vaccine circuit that would have been the cause of the accident that caused the death of the young man,” indicates the ARS of Pays de la Loire in a press release.
At the end of October, a fifth-grade student at the Saint-Dominique school in Saint-Herblain, near Nantes, in the Loire-Atlantique, felt unwell and then suffered a “hard fall,” fifteen minutes after being vaccinated, which left him caused a head injury.
Hospitalized at the Nantes University Hospital, the teenager’s condition worsened over the following days and he died.
“Elements” still to be “deepened”
The investigation was opened just a month ago, on October 24, at the request of the director general of the ARS. The objective was “to establish the conditions for carrying out vaccination and its medical control in the establishment, as well as the conditions for the child’s medical care.”
However, the ARS recommends implementing several recommendations after the death of the student. It calls for “clarifying the role and missions of the different actors during a vaccination session”, “better preventing the risk of stress for young people”, “fully mobilizing the vaccination team for vaccination and post-vaccination medical surveillance, in a relationship of trust with the young person” and finally “comply with certain processes of the vaccination team.
Furthermore, the ARS considers in its press release that an additional investigation into the circumstances of the schoolboy’s death is necessary. “There are still elements to be explored in greater depth regarding the conditions to activate emergency assistance and care for the young person after he falls,” adds the agency, specifying that its general director will entrust this issue to the General Inspection of Social Affairs. spot.
There are no contraindications to continue vaccination.
“In view of the conclusions of the administrative investigation mission, the vaccination campaign in Pays de la Loire can continue,” concludes the health authority.
For its part, the Nantes prosecutor’s office had opened an investigation for homicide.
The autopsy confirmed that “the young man’s death was due to head trauma,” revealed the Nantes prosecutor, Renaud Gaudeul. “Today we have no evidence to indicate that the vaccine product itself was the cause of death,” he added.
A campaign suspended for a time
Following this death, the vaccination campaign was suspended in Loire-Atlantique on Friday, October 20, the eve of the school holidays. It resumed at the start of the school year on November 6.
