Tobacco: the smoking ban will be extended to beaches, parks and public places

Tobacco remains the main cause of preventable mortality in France, with 75,000 deaths per year. A gradual increase in the price of cigarettes is also confirmed, calculated based on the expected increase in inflation.

During a press conference organized mid-morning, the Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, detailed the government’s new national tobacco control program, which covers the period from 2023 to 2027. During this press conference, the latter first recalled place the harmful effects of tobacco, “the “first cause of avoidable mortality in France” that “weighs on our solidarity system”.

During this speech, the minister announced the expansion of tobacco-free spaces on beaches, parks, forests and around public places. “Now the norm will be to stop smoking,” he insisted.

“Tobacco-free spaces, of which there are already more than 7,200 in more than 73 departments, are above all the result of a movement promoted locally by municipalities. Today we are reversing the responsibility and establishing this principle that is becoming the rule “. , the minister further specifies.

During the same press conference, Aurélien Rousseau assured that the price of a pack of cigarettes will increase to a minimum of 13 euros during 2026, with a first step of 12 euros in 2025. The increase in tobacco prices “is in fact the most effective measure against tobacco according to the WHO and all independent studies on the subject,” he explained.
