The flu continues to advance in France, four new regions in pre-epidemic phase

In this first week of December, Public Health France (SpF) published its weekly respiratory disease surveillance bulletin. The bronchiolitis epidemic continues as Covid-19 and flu indicators continue to rise.

Rising indicators. This Wednesday, December 6, Public Health France (SpF) announced that Burgundy-France-Comté, Centre-Loire Valley, Grand-Est and Guyana were entering the pre-epidemic phase of the flu.

These regions are therefore added to Ile-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Guyana. Mayotte has already been in the epidemic phase for several weeks.

“The indicators of flu syndrome increase in community medicine and affect all age groups,” the health authority wrote in its weekly bulletin. “In the hospital, the number of visits and the proportion of all-cause visits increased slightly, but hospitalizations remained stable.”

“Upward trend” for Covid-19

For several weeks, health authorities have feared an increase in respiratory infections. Last year, a triple epidemic (Covid-19, bronchiolitis and flu) further damaged the French health system.

Regarding bronchiolitis, all regions of mainland France are in the epidemic phase, but SpF observes a “tendency towards stabilization of indicators in community medicine and smaller increases than the previous week in emergency visits and hospitalizations after the visit to the emergency room for bronchiolitis”. .

On the other hand, the trend is “upward” for Covid-19. “An increase in virological indicators of the tests carried out in medical biology laboratories was observed in all age groups of the analyzed population,” SpF indicated.

He continued: “This week a sharp increase (+24%) was observed in the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, indicating active circulation of the virus in France.”

SpF encourages the French to “systematically” adopt barrier gestures and get vaccinated against Covid-19 and flu, particularly people at risk of becoming seriously ill.
