At 67 years old, Bernard Pino is finally a doctor. Since December 15, the “young” doctor has taken possession of his position on the island of Sein, in Finistère, the fruit of a 40-year dream. When he was 20 years old, this sixty-year-old had already started studying medicine, but he was forced to give it up.
“I started when I was 20 years old, I studied medicine for 6 years, then I left it for financial reasons (….) there was always the idea of starting again one day, that could be achieved when I was 56,” he confides to BFMTV.
Now, after graduating in September, he shares the practice with another general practitioner on the island. “I have a special liking for the islands. It allowed me to work for a few years alternately with another doctor and share a patient base,” she explains. “In 10 years, I would have stopped doing it so I wouldn’t see myself taking care of a patient and then leaving.”
“It wasn’t possible then, it is today”
Every two months, Bernard Pino works in this office. The rest of the time, he performs “substitutions throughout France, in hospital services or with medical colleagues.” On the island of Sein, his daily life consists of “taking care of the pharmacy part, the nursing part, medicine, emergencies…”
Won’t you get bored in this little piece of land, in the heart of the Celtic Sea? Although he admits that winter is a bit boring, the area comes to life in spring, with the arrival of tourists. “The first day I arrived there was a helicopter evacuation,” he recalls.
“I didn’t see myself as anything other than a doctor, I did other things for pleasure (…) but a doctor is something else. It wasn’t possible at that time, that’s all. Today it is,” he rejoices. .
