Healthy life expectancy at 65 is falling in France

Affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, life expectancy without disability at age 65 reaches 10.2 years for men and 11.8 years for women, according to a study by Drees presented this Friday.

At age 65, women can expect to live 11.8 years without disability, that is, without being limited in the activities of daily living, and men 10.2 years, according to a study by Drees published on Friday, December 22.

Fewer years than in 2021: healthy life expectancy then reached 12.6 years for women and 11.3 years for men.

In France, “life expectancy at birth is increasing regularly, although it has been affected by the Covid-19 epidemic and has not yet returned to its 2019 value, before the epidemic,” underlines the Department of Studies and Statistics of the Social Ministries.

“But these additional years of life are not necessarily lived “in good health,” adds Drees, which publishes each year an indicator that measures life expectancy in good health.

France above the European average

This disability-free life expectancy at age 65 has increased since 2008 by one year and nine months for women and by one year and six months for men, details Drees.

In 2021, the most recent year for which data is available for all European countries, France ranked fourth among the 27 countries in the European Union for disability-free life expectancy for men at age 65, with a level higher than the European average (+1 year and 10 months).

For women, France ranks third, again above the European average (+2 years and 8 months).
