The number of cholera cases in Mayotte now amounts to 26, the prefecture and the Regional Health Agency announced on Sunday, April 28, specifying that a new “cholera unit” was opened in a medical center.

“26 cases have been confirmed since the start of the cholera alert,” indicate the prefecture of Mayotte and the Regional Health Agency in a statement. An earlier report reported 13 cases on Friday.

“Given the situation, and to guarantee assistance to all the sick, the Regional Health Agency and the Mayotte Hospital Center have made the decision to open a second cholera unit as of today,” in the reference medical center of Mayotte. Dzoumogné.

The first unit, with capacity for a maximum of 14 people within the Mayotte Hospital Centre, can no longer accommodate new patients. Pending the arrival of future reinforcements, the Mayotte Hospital Center is concentrating its staff on cholera-related treatment.

In fact, the region lacks caregivers. According to Olivier Brahic, director general of the ARS, “the situation at the Mayotte hospital center, in terms of human resources, remains very critical, especially in the emergency department.”

A detection center

“The epidemic is spreading without any real control in the neighborhoods of the densely populated urban area of ​​Mamoudzou-Koungou, especially in slums devoid of the most basic public health services,” the LR deputy for Mayotte is alarmed in a statement. . statement, Mansour Kamardine, recalling that “the entire territory of Mayotte remains subject to restrictions on access to running water.”

The parliamentarian requests in particular “a general vaccination plan (voluntary vaccination) accessible to everyone, in particular children and vulnerable people.”
