“A risk to consumer health.” The Greater East Regional Health Agency (ARS) sends a warning to residents of the commune of Rédange in Moselle, as reported by France Bleu, this Sunday, May 26.
During a monthly analysis of tap water carried out on April 22, the health agency detected “a calcium imbalance” in the drink that comes out of the tap.
As a result, the water “has an aggressive character, which can cause corrosion in the pipes, which can cause an increase in certain substances (lead, copper).”
The water flowing through the taps of the 1,000 inhabitants of Rédange, near the border with Meurthe-et-Moselle and Luxembourg, presents “a risk to the health of consumers.”
Drought and heavy rain
How to protect yourself from it? You are asked to let the water run “a few minutes” before serving. “When we drink tap water, it may have stagnated, so it is better to let it run a little to find more pleasant water,” Daniel Cimarelli, mayor of the Moselle town, adds to local radio.
The councilor suggests a relationship between this situation and the chaotic climate of recent months. After a long drought, the department experienced significant rains last weekend; Météo-France even put the department on red weather alert on May 17 and 18.
“The water has had time to become loaded with carbonate ions (…) that concentration increases, we have problems with the pipes, for example, because this attacks the pipes and that is why there are products, such as cupric ions, that will be found in the water”, outlines who foresees a return to normality in the coming weeks.
