A 62-year-old woman died this Saturday, May 25, in Mamoudzou due to cholera, bringing the number of deaths related to this disease in Mayotte to two, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced on Sunday.
The woman died “in her house located on the heights of the Cavani neighborhood, in Mamoudzou,” the ARS said in a statement.
“In accordance with the cholera control protocol, intervention teams went to the scene to disinfect the home and care for people close to the deceased,” he added.
“Starting” this Sunday, vaccination operations for contact cases will be carried out.
A three-year-old child, the first victim since the beginning of the epidemic
This is the second death related to this epidemic in Mayotte, the poorest of the French departments, located on the Indian Ocean.
On May 8, a three-year-old boy died of cholera, which has affected several dozen people in recent months in Mayotte.
The first cases of cholera in the territory were recorded in mid-March in people returning from neighboring Comoros, where the epidemic is worsening. In Mayotte, at the end of April the first “native” cases appeared, diagnosed in patients who had not left the French island.
Cholera, a bacterial disease that can cause acute diarrhea and lead to death from dehydration within one to three days, is transmitted through contaminated water or food. There are effective vaccines and treatments.
