Dengue continues to arrive in France. In a bulletin released this Wednesday, June 19, Public Health of France takes stock of the circulation of dengue, chikungunya and Zika in mainland France.
Between May 1 and June 18, 601 imported cases of dengue were observed. In 60% of the cases, or 366 cases, they returned from Guadeloupe or Martinique. As a reminder, this is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes to humans.
Public Health France also notes that between May 1 and June 18 of this year, two imported cases of chikungunya and one case of Zika were observed.
2,166 cases of Dengue since January 1
Imported cases of dengue are particularly numerous in this year 2024. Since January 1, 2,166 infections have been observed, of which “82% were contracted in Martinique or Guadeloupe and 5% in Guyana, departments where it is occurring.” a major epidemic.” The organization also recorded 5 chikungunya infections and 2 cases of Zika in total.
Although the tiger mosquito is present in the vast majority of metropolitan departments, authorities fear “indigenous chains of transmission.” However, for the moment there has been “no episode of indigenous transmission”, which corresponds to a crime committed directly on French territory.
The Pasteur Institute has also warned of the risks of transmission of the virus by mosquitoes during the Paris Olympic Games. The number of infections is “expected” to “increase” due to “additional flows of people from countries where other arboviruses are endemic,” the Institute writes.
