The emergency staff of the University Hospital of Grenoble Alpes (CHUGA) announced on Monday that they had submitted a notice of indefinite strike starting Tuesday to demand the decongestion of the service, where dozens of patients regularly “paralyze” for hours, even several days.
“The current situation is a real danger for staff and patients,” denounces the CGT in a press release and an open letter addressed to the management of the establishment.
A “particularly complex situation”, according to the management
“Every day, with a capacity of 55 patients, this department has an average of more than 66 patients present simultaneously during the day (…) Patients are stuck in the emergency room for hours, even days, due to lack of space in hospitalization departments in CHUGA and in other establishments. Ten patients a day remain in the emergency room for more than 24 hours,” the guild is outraged, whose only claim refers to “the end of the stagnation of patients in the emergency room in the afterlife. 12 hours of presence.”
Contacted by our AFP colleagues, the hospital management recognizes a “particularly complex situation” and says that it is “fully aware of the difficulties facing the adult emergency service”.
Limited emergency reception at night
It undertakes to “continue the dialogue and launch all innovative actions to relieve hospital professionals” and ensures that, for the time being, “the continuity of reception and care is ensured, in particular through the transfer of professionals, and this in accordance with the regulations”.
From June 27, 2022, the CHUGA emergency room has limited night reception to patients who have previously called 15, remember.
In addition, “to alleviate the difficulties of the downstream beds, a second post-emergency unit will be inaugurated on November 3 with the main objective of hospitalizing emergency patients,” the management also indicates.
But this measure, which would only affect ten beds, is “insufficient” according to the CGT, which argues that “more than 200 beds (are) closed in CHUGA due to lack of personnel.”
