Smoking: quitting smoking would prevent 103,000 cases of myocardial infarction in France

If the aging of the population is a factor that explains the increase in the prevalence of this cardiovascular disease, smoking is also a factor.

The work of Public Health France (SpF) is based on a clear premise: the prevalence of myocardial infarction in the country will increase significantly between now and 2035.

If half of the increase in this prevalence is solely due to the aging of the population, another culprit, smoking, is pointed out in the article entitled “Impact of smoking prevention scenarios on the burden of myocardial infarction in 2035 in France” , published on November 12 by the health agency. In France, it is estimated that 21% of cardiovascular hospitalizations are attributable to tobacco.

Various scenarios

Thus, the Spf studied various scenarios to reduce smoking in France among people aged 18 to 75 years and their consequences in terms of the prevalence of this cardiovascular disease. To date, the proportion of daily smokers remains high and will reach 24.5% in 2022.

With a proportion of smokers of 22% in 2027, a reduction of 10% annually, this reduction would prevent 45,000 cases of myocardial infarction in 2035, of which more than 60% among those under 65 years of age, and 4,500 deaths from heart attacks. of myocardium and 265,000 deaths from all causes.

Better yet, with a theoretical scenario of total smoking cessation in France in 2024, which would allow the maximum gain to be estimated, it would prevent 103,000 cases of myocardial infarction, 12,800 deaths from myocardial infarction and 653,000 deaths from all causes in 2035.

In general, “beyond the impact on the number of cases and deaths, a reduction in the prevalence of smoking in the population would mean a reduction in the average age of onset of the disease from 2.8 years to 4.1 years for men and 1.1 years to 2.0 years for women,” we are still learning.

Intensify the fight against smoking

“These results confirm the relevance of ambitious numerical objectives in terms of reducing smoking,” underline Johann Kuhn and Valérie Olié, responsible for this work at Sante Pública France.

In France, the fight against smoking has become an important objective for the government. At the end of 2023, while still Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau announced an increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes with a minimum price It gradually increased to 13 euros during 2026.with a first step to 12 euros in 2025.

Since January 2024, the price of the package had increased, this time due to inflation, by between 40 and 50 cents.

Aurélien Rousseau also announced the generalization of tobacco-free spacesincluding beaches, public parks, forests and around certain public places, particularly schools.

In recent weeks, the European Commission has also recommended banning cigarettes on outdoor terraces.
