Bronchiolitis is taking hold in France. The latest bulletin from Public Health France, published this Wednesday, November 27, warns of an “increase in the vast majority of indicators” of this disease.
The public health body has placed seven regions of mainland France in the epidemic phase, the highest level of surveillance. These are Brittany, New Aquitaine, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Rhône-Alpes, Centre-Loire Valley, Ile-de-France and Hauts-de-France. Until then, only the last two regions were in the focus of Public Health France. Guyana and the Antilles remain affected by a bronchiolitis epidemic.
A smaller epidemic than in recent years
“Syndromic indicators related to bronchiolitis increased both in the city and in the hospital environment. RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) detection rates in nasopharyngeal samples increased in both community medicine and the hospital setting,” explains Public. Health. France in its bulletin.
“Other viruses that can cause bronchiolitis are currently still circulating in France, in particular rhinoviruses/enteroviruses,” continues the health organization.
In the last seven days, “among the 6,768 medical interventions by SOS Médicos carried out on children under 2 years of age, 515 interventions (7.6%) were related to bronchiolitis”, writes Santé Pública France, specifying that “among children under At 2.2 years old, bronchiolitis accounted for 13.7% of emergency department visits and 27.2% of hospitalizations in this age group.
The intensity of the bronchiolitis epidemic remains less significant than in recent years, whether in terms of the number of SOS Medical interventions, emergency room visits or hospitalizations.
At the same time, the flu continues to develop, with an “increase in indicators in the city and in hospitals in most age groups.” Three regions, Normandy, Ile-de-France and Upper France, are in the pre-epidemic phase. Regarding Covid-19, the health organization notes “a decrease in most virological indicators.”
