Simplifying the lives of people with chronic illnesses. This is the ambition of the decree that now allows pharmacists to “dispense the medications and health products necessary for the continuation of chronic treatment within three months” after the expiration of the prescription, published on Thursday, November 28 in the Diario Official. Previously, pharmacists could only extend this period by one month.
During their renewal act, pharmacists must, however, notify the doctor who issued the prescription “by secure means of communication” and will also be required to write on the prescription (on paper or electronic) all medications supplied after expiration. of the order. .
Furthermore, even if the prescription is renewed for three months, pharmacists will only be able to provide the equivalent of one month of treatment at a time.
Opposition from general practitioners
Several medications are excluded from this new framework, such as anxiolytics, hypnotics or opioids, indicates Ouest-France.
It is, however, necessary that extended prescriptions issued by pharmacists be carried out “on an exceptional basis and to avoid any interruption of treatment detrimental to the patient’s health,” the decree specifies.
This measure was opposed by general practitioner unions, who consider that the six-month period that can now separate two consultations is too long.
