Flu epidemic: a “clear increase in deaths” is observed, but there is no peak yet

In a weekly epidemiological bulletin published this Wednesday, January 15, Santé Publique France takes stock of the circulation of the flu in France. The pressure on health services is significant.

France continues with fever. The flu epidemic continues to intensify, according to the latest data from Public Health France shared this Wednesday, January 15. The health agency notes an “intensification of flu activity in the cities of France”, while the infection map is completely red in the continental territory. A “clear increase in deaths” is mentioned.

The period is characterized by a “marked severity of the epidemic, with very high hospital activity and a clear increase in deaths,” according to the SPF.

At the hospital, “a decrease in flu/flu syndrome indicators was observed over the past week among ER visits and hospitalizations across all age groups.” With the exception of a strong increase among children under five years of age.

Increasing mortality

The mortality data provided by the INSEE allow us to observe an “excess” mortality “among people aged 15 to 64 and 65 to 84 years, with an excess also marked” among those over 85 years of age.

“This excess mortality is probably related to the flu epidemic,” health authorities indicated in this weekly bulletin.

This percentage of deaths from influenza even rises to 12.4% in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, 9.4% in Grand Est, 9.2% in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and 7.9% in Haute-France. and Auvergne. Rhône-Alpes region, indicated the health agency.

The agency reminds that vaccination is the best method to avoid mortality resulting from severe forms of the disease, especially among at-risk populations. Only 35.2% of the population targeted by the current vaccination campaign received a dose this year, “41.0% among people aged 65 and over, and 19.0% among those under 65 years old at risk of suffering from severe flu.

According to information from BFMTV, more than a million doses are still in pharmacies, in the city and in hospitals. However, they could be poorly distributed in the territory, according to the Union of Community Pharmacists’ Unions.
