An increase that cares about this day of fighting cancer. Several recent studies report an increase in this disease in young adults. In this population, digestive cancers (colon, esophagus, liver …) but also thyroid, breasts and kidneys are more represented.
Between 1990 and 2019, the cancer rate almost doubled (+79%) in this age group worldwide, according to a large study published in 2023 by the BMJ oncology, and this phenomenon particularly affects developed countries.
Another recent study of the American Cancer Society, published on January 21, attests to this increase in young American adults, especially women.
Obesity, ultra formed food …
“For people born in the 90s or later, the risk of developing colon cancer is multiplied by 3.6 and the risk of developed pancreatic cancer is 2.5,” said Professor Fabrice at BFMTV Barlesi, managing director of the Gustave Roussy Institute Against cancer.
Among the possible causes of this increase, the previous exposure to new risk factors: “Ultraprocessing foods (ultra -entertainment, editor’s note), obesity and, in general, metabolism and chronic inflammation disorder”, lists the Professor Fabrice André. “The role of microplastics deserves to be raised, it is a hypothesis,” he adds.
Some studies “are interested in what happened at the age of very young, since it is probably where the exhibition is made,” others seek to analyze “if these cancers differ from those of adulthood,” Professor Fabrice André, Gustave Roussy’s research director told AFP.
According to the Gustave Roussy Institute, it should be possible to cure 80% of cancers by 2040 thanks to the acceleration of technological progress in diagnosis and treatments. “Today, 450,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed each year in France, and two out of every three patients heal, against one in two in the 1990s,” he said in mid -January before the press teacher Fabrice Barlesi, in Anticipation of this World Day for the Day of the Cancer fighting of February 4.
“It arrives in 15 years in 80% of patients cured at age five thanks to the acceleration of technological progress, medications and treatments that will be available conjugated antibodies, vectorized internal radiotherapy …- We seem realistic,” he added.
