Several hundreds of cases of salmonellosis have been detected, including three in France, in Europe, the mourning seeds are the cause of these infections, says an ECDC evaluation (European Center for Disease Prevention and Control) and EFSA (European Food Security Authority).
Surveys conducted by the Public Health and Food Security authorities in several European countries have confirmed that the origin of these cases germinated in the lights of Luzerne connected to a single supplier in Italy that was being obtained from three producers.
The research has yet allowed to determine how the seeds were contaminated and if there has been cross contamination in the supply chain.
Eight serotypes detected
Between January 2023 and January 2025, 509 people have suffered salmonellosis in nine countries of the European Union. The most affected country was Norway, with 257 cases, followed by Sweden (110), Finland (94) and Germany (30). Another case was also reported in the United Kingdom.
In total, eight salmonellosis serotypes have been detected, some of which are rarely observed in Europe according to the ECDC.
The epidemic continues and the cases of salmonellosis can continue to be detected until contaminated seeds are properly identified and controlled.
Salmonellosis, an infection due to salmonella that manifests itself in particular by gastroenteritis, can cause serious diseases, especially in babies, elderly or fragile adults, and immunocompromised people. Therefore, the ECDC asks the fragile people not to consume these seeds sprouts “unless they have cooked well.”
