The National Academy of Medicine of France expressed concern this Wednesday, March 12 against the “harmful consequences” of US disconnection in actions in favor of global health, which marks a “worrying inflection point.”
These decisions “mark a deep rest, which will have harmful consequences for populations” but also “for global health and international medical research,” deplores the academy in a press release.
“By drastically reducing their financial and human contribution to crucial programs, these measures endanger the main advances in the fight against global pandemics and the financing of international medical research,” he continues.
“European leadership”
The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced Monday that 83% of the USAID development agency programs, which represent a substantial participation of global humanitarian aid, would be eliminated.
Several organizations from all over the world already affirm the consequences of freezing American humanitarian aid, either because of the fight against AIDS in South Africa or Kenya, or popular soups in Sudan, a country devastated by war.
The Academy of Medicine requires “maintaining a collective participation in global health”, “rethinking global health governance” and “affirming European leadership” against US withdrawal.
Since its inauguration, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced brutal cuts in public research funds, the withdrawal of the United States of the World Health Organization (WHO) or the dismissal of hundreds of employees of federal agencies in charge of the climate or health sciences.
