Emmanuel Macron estimated this Saturday, July 26 that it was “imperative to prevent episodes of violence from being repeated” in Syria, asking to persecute officials of the last days of the last days in the country, after having met the interim president Sirio Ahmad al-Chareh.
“The recent violence in Syria recalls the extreme fragility of the transition. Civil populations must be protected,” the French president wrote, which requires a “peaceful dialogue” locally to “allow responding to the objective of the Unification of Syria in compliance with the rights of all its cities.”
Syria was the scene of violence between communities that left more than 1,300 dead, mostly Druss, between July 13 and 20 in the south of the country.
“The urgency of finding a political solution”
A high fire entered into force last Sunday, praised by Emmanuel Macron, who sees it as a “positive signal”, while relations between transition authorities and the various minorities of the country are concerned part of the international community.
“I spoke with the Syrian president of the urgency of finding a political solution with local actors, in a national framework of governance and security,” said the French head of state.
Paris, Damascus and Washington agreed on Friday to be held a new cycle of conversations “as soon as possible” between the Syrian government and the Kurdish administration, in the French capital, to integrate the Kurds into the Syrian state.
Fragile agreement
Mazloum Abdi, head of the FDS: the armed arm of the Kurds supported by Washington, and Ahmad Al-Chareh concluded on March 10 an agreement destined to integrate the Kurdish institutions in the Syrian state. Since then, several negotiation sessions have taken place, but the discussions are stuck.
“It is essential that negotiations between Syrian democratic forces and Syrian authorities progress in good faith,” Emmanuel Macron urged this Saturday.
According to the French president, the two leaders also mentioned on Saturday “exchanges with Israel”, marking their “support for cooperation in the stabilization of the Syro-Libanese border.”
Ahmad Al-Chareh, who has long addressed the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham armed group of the former Al-Qaeda branch in Syria, had made his first official visit to a western country in Paris. This visit had aroused strong criticisms in France with respect to Emmanuel Macron, emanating from the right and the extreme right.
