BFMTV document. A doctor tells the “barely credible” rescue of a woman after 4 hours of cardiac massage

A 22 -year -old woman, in hypothermia and heart arrest, survived after receiving 4 hours of cardiac massage in Oise last February. An “exceptional” situation entrusts BFMTV, one of the doctors who took care of it.

The medical team still has trouble believing it. A 22 -year -old woman survived after receiving heart massages for 4 hours, while she was in cardiac arrest and hypothermia. One of the doctors who dealt with it testifies to BFMTV.

“(This type of case) is observed in cases of deep hypothermia, but that they are still rare cases. Above all, the fact that the heart comes out after so long, is exceptional,” says Dr. Estelle Renaud, structure of the resuscitation service of the Public Hospital South Oise (GHPSO) in BFMTV.

“It is the first and I think that the only one (times) of my life that I will see such a situation. It is a very, very beautiful story,” he trusts with a big smile.

At 25 ° C, your body is in severe “hypothermia”

On February 9, the young woman lost knowledge in a street in Nogent-Sur-Oise, in the OISE. He immediately received a cardiac massage, before firefighters took over.

Emergency services then point out that the young woman is in cardiac arrest and hypothermia, her body is only 25 ° C. It is then transferred to the emergency department “where he is still in cardiac arrest,” said the doctor. This time, a machine takes care of cardiac massages. “It was an hour of attention,” says Dr. Estelle Renaud.

“We continue resuscitation in this context of severe hypothermia where we know that we can have exceptionally good results,” he explains. “The objective is, in any case, to continue resuscitation until obtaining a standardized body temperature”, which occurs “after four hours.”

“A big surprise”

In fact, it is after four hours that the patient finally responds to the care provided. “The patient, while she was still in heart massage, thanks to a specific machine, she presented signs of awakening,” recalls Dr. Estelle Renaud.

“(The patient) began to swallow, to cough, flash with his eyes and his heart had gone at that time. We still had no real contact, but in any case, he was no longer in an apparent death,” said the doctor.

“It was a big surprise when the nurses called us to say: ‘Cligs Eyes’, it was barely credible. It is a story that touched everyone and motivates everyone in their daily work,” the doctor smiles, still moved.

Without neurological sequelae

After medical exams, doctors find that the young woman presents an “intact that becomes neurological”, that is, he has no neurological sequelae.

“On the other hand, all other organs had suffered greatly due to low speed and prolonged cardiac arrest,” said the doctor. Consequently, the patient “required an organ replacement for a few weeks,” before being able to leave the service.

“The lungs, the heart, the liver, the kidneys suffer since there is a natural reflection of the human body to preserve the brain that is the most important organ of the organism if it can be said,” explains the head of the resuscitation service.

“The importance of cardiac massage”

The doctor emphasizes how quickly acting is essential in this type of situation. In fact, the young woman immediately received a heart massage in the street after her loss of consciousness. “This is what made it possible to preserve their brain functions,” said Dr. Estelle Renaud.

“This situation (…) points out the importance of cardiac massage. For any citizen who sees a collapsed person, he practices cardiac massage,” he advises the doctor.

“It is a gesture available to everyone, it is a civic gesture that saves lives”; She still states.
