This is kyiv’s proposal made in Moscow. The head of the Ukrainian delegation for Peace Negotiations in Istanbul said on Wednesday, July 23 that he had proposed in Moscow a meeting between Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin “before the end of August.”
“The number one priority is to organize the meeting of leaders, presidents,” Roustem Oumerov said at a press conference, adding that the Ukrainian party had proposed that such a meeting before the end of August “and that the participation of US and Turkish presidents would be” beautiful. “Russia has not confirmed such a meeting.
After just an hour of discussions at the Palais de çiragan, the negotiators discovered that their respective “positions” were “quite distant from each other,” said Vladimir Medinski, head of the Russian delegation, during a statement to the press.
“No one expects an easy path”
During the day, the Kremlin had already bathed the hopes of advances to end the conflict launched in February 2022 by Moscow in his neighbor and made tens of thousands of dead and injured.
“No one expects an easy path. Of course, it will be a very complicated discussion,” said Russian presidency spokesman Dmitri Peskov, repeating that the proposals of the respective belligerents to stop the conflict were “diametrically opposite.”
The only concrete measure: the negotiators agreed a new exchange of 1,200 prisoners on each side, according to Vladimir Medinski, as has already been the case several times.
Moscow also proposed to mark kyiv to give him 3,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, as well as truckers of “24 to 48 hours” in the front so that the two armies can recover their dead and injured, Mr. Medinski continued.
