Denmark should have eradicated cervical cancer by 2040, thanks to the membership of the HPV vaccination program and detection, he said on Monday, April 14.
“It will be the first time that a type of cancer disappeared,” said the Danish League to combat cancer in a press release.
Currently, the recurrence rate of this type of cancer is less than 10 out of every 100,000, according to a study published in the Journal of Danish Doctors. According to the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease will be considered eradicated in Denmark with a recurrence rate of less than 4 of 100,000.
Emphasis on vaccination
The vaccination rate against papillomava infection (HPV), the main cause of the disease, is 89% for 12 -year -old boys and girls in the first of the two doses of the vaccine. It is a little less than the 90%objective.
This free vaccine was presented to girls in 2008-2009 and in 2019 in boys. In detection, 60% of women in Denmark accept the offer, ten points less than the objective of 70% participation.
Sweden shows an even closer eradication objective: 2027, according to Swedish regional cancer (CCR) centers.
