BFMTV Information. Meningococcal meningitis in Rennes: 50 identified contact cases, a third potential case

After the hospitalization of two 16 and 19 -year -old young people in Rennes on Monday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 30 for meningococcal meningitis, about fifty contact cases were identified, according to BFMTV information. A third case is suspected.

Two 16 and 19 -year -old young people entered resuscitation at the Rennes University Hospital this week, affected by meningococcal meningitis. The first was Monday, April 28 and the second on April 30. After these infections, about fifty contact cases were identified, according to BFMTV information.

The first young man participated in a party last Saturday. It is unknown, for the moment, if the second young man was present at the same party as the first.

According to health insurance, contact cases are “people who have been in direct contact (face to face) (at least an hour in a row) with secretions of the patient’s nose and throat, within 10 days before hospitalization.”

Strong suspicion for a third patient

According to BFMTV information this Friday, May 2, a third patient is hospitalized for a strong suspicion of invasive infection in Meningococcal B, the infection is not yet confirmed at this time.

The number of cases since the beginning of the year is very important (95 cases declared for January and 89 for February, dated March 7, according to public health France) and Iille-Et-Vilaine is particularly affected.

Therefore, Brittany’s Regional Health Agency launched, therefore, on March 3, a vaccination campaign “against Meningococcus B for young people aged 15 to 24, inhabitants or schooling or students in Rennes Métropole, that is, around 100,000 people,” he said. To date, more than 64,000 people have received at least one dose.

As indicated by the Pasteur Institute, “Meningococcos constitute the main causes of acute meningitis.” They are transmitted “by drops of saliva, which restricts its transmission compared to aerosols (microgotlettes suspended in the air),” says the AR. There are several meningococic groups in France: B, C, W E Y. “In the present case in Rennes Métropole, it is Group B,” specifies.
