“I tremble all the time.” Singer Clara Luciani, who will soon be in the We Love Green Festival in Paris, spoke in the Konbini Small Talk the Essential Tremor podcast, a disease that he suffers and that affects her in her daily life.
“It’s very annoying because there are many situations in my life in which they told me: ‘Did you drink it? Did you take drugs? Are you intimidated?’ And it was nothing like that, just tremble all the time, “he explains.
A pathology more hereditary
The essential tremor is a frequent neurological disorder that is manifested by involuntary movements that most frequently affect the hands, but also the head, voice or other parts of the body.
The exact causes of this disease, which can begin at any age, are not known completely, but we know that it is mainly a hereditary disorder linked to anomalies in certain areas of the brain, including cerebellum, which controls movements.
A disability with a strong psychological impact
The particularity of this tremor is that it occurs when the person performs voluntary movements, such as writing or grabbing an object. It can get worse with emotion, fatigue or stress. It can be perceived as a lower discomfort at the beginning, it can worsen over time.
“My mother has the same and I think she will not work over the years,” said Clara Luciani during his interview.
The essential tremor also has a non -drop -down psychological impact, especially when tremors become visible or invasive.
“What accentuates my tremors is nervousness and the fact that I can see that I am trembling. And it was very complicated for my first televisions because I told myself: ‘People will realize that I am trembling. And the most I thought about it, I trembled most,” Clara Luciani told Konbini.
Several possible treatments
In his interview with Konbini, Clara Lucía says he took Beta blockers several times, a medication that slows the heart and decreases blood pressure by blocking the effect of adrenaline and is used in particular to reduce tremors. However, they are contraindicated in case of asthma or severe hypotension.
An antiepileptic primidone can also be prescribed, if the beta block is not enough or that the tremors are greater. Finally, it is possible to carry out botulinum toxin injections in the muscle reached in the tremor. Toxin then blocks nerve transmission and makes it possible to relax the muscle, but the effect only lasts a few months.
The health insurance site indicates that in the case of the failure of medication treatments, there are two possible surgical interventions. Keep in mind that it is expected that only in rare cases. First there is a deep brain stimulation that requires “an opening of the cranial box” and consists of implementing one or more electrodes in the brain to stimulate certain areas by an electric current.
The other possible intervention is the talamotomy that aims to destroy the sick tissue in the thalamus, located in the center of the brain, which receives a lot of information from our senses. This talamotomy can be done by radiofrequency (an electrode is inserted into the cranial box and the injured area is destroyed by heat) or by sterotaxic radiation where the radiation very directed in the area to be destroyed and this, without opening the cranial box.
