The vaccination rate against respiratory diseases, including flu and beloved, is insufficient in pregnant women, lamented the Academy of Medicine this Thursday, May 22, emphasizing that these infections can damage the mother and the child.
“Although the efficiency and tolerance of all these vaccines are well established in pregnant women and the newborn, the corresponding vaccination rates are still very insufficient in France,” he says in a press release of the Academy, an institution that aims to give the consensus of the medical profession on a certain subject. Against respiratory diseases, several vaccines should be theoretically offered to all pregnant women: dear, covid and flu.

Disparities according to social classes and regions
These recommendations are not sufficiently put in practices, according to the Academy of Medicine, which especially emphasizes that only 20% to 30% of pregnant women are vaccinated against the flu, and that a third is not against Darling.
There are also “important disparities according to social classes and regions, especially in Antilles and Guyana, where coverage rates are extremely low,” he says.
However, diseases in question can damage both the mother and the child: “They are often serious in pregnant women and can lead to premature birth and a severe infection of the newborn,” recalls the academy.
Vaccines are not offered enough
As an explanation for insufficient vaccination, the institution evokes the distrust of certain pregnant women against vaccines in question, but especially the fact that these vaccines are not offered enough during medical monitoring of pregnancy.
“No consultation is specifically dedicated to vaccination during pregnancy monitoring and the vaccination law depends on the motivation of the doctor or the midwife,” says the academy. “Therefore, it is often postponed or forget.”
The institution issues several proposals. First, he wants health insurance to send, as soon as the pregnancy announce, the coupons that allow the complete refund of the vaccines in question, accompanied by “adequate and understandable” information.
He also asks to open the possibility of vaccination in all places where a woman consults for her pregnancy: “Maternity, doctor and midwife, maternal and infant protection (PMI), pharmacies.” The academy also recommends better caregivers training and an acceleration of clinical vaccine trials with pregnant women, to better understand specific effects during pregnancy.
