Hospital crisis: 29% of nurses “plan to leave the profession” in the next 12 months

These results come from an internal survey of the National Order of Nurses, which also warns about the concern of patients about the reduction in the supply of care.

“Results that confirm the urgency to act”. The National Order of Nurses (ONI) released a survey this Wednesday that highlights the difficulties in which professionals find themselves today and points out the great risk of resignations in the coming months.

The Order questioned its members on various points and according to its results, 29% of those surveyed “plan to leave the profession in the next 12 months”. On the other hand, “only 27% would recommend the profession to their relatives or their children”. Data that could pose a problem in the long and short term, emphasizes the ONI.

The deterioration of working conditions

Among the problems mentioned by the nurses surveyed, 94% of them “believe that their skills are not sufficiently recognized in society” and “83% find that their working conditions have deteriorated in recent months”.

“It’s a job that I loved, but I don’t see why he would continue to agree to let me be mistreated,” explains Manon Lefort, a nurse who hung up her blouse in July, for example. “It’s unfortunate, because basically I did this job with a passion.”

Added to this are remuneration levels, considered too low within the profession. “I have decided to resign because I am exhausted”, said a nice nurse at RMC in June. “Salary is a problem, but not only. Everything has increased. They pay me 1,900 euros, a decent wage, but I am overdrawn every month.”

Concern “that the supply of care will deteriorate in the future”

Parallel to this internal consultation, the ONI commissioned a survey among the French from the OpinionWay institute. And those surveyed also say they regret “89% that nurses’ skills are not sufficiently recognized by society and 91% that nurses’ working conditions are increasingly difficult.”

89% of the nurses surveyed (compared to 77% in May 2022) also indicated in the internal study “that their patients are concerned about the difficulty of accessing healthcare establishments and healthcare professionals”.

The OpinionWay survey also reflects this concern. 89% of those surveyed say they are concerned “for themselves and for their loved ones given the idea that the care offer will deteriorate in the future”, and 87% think “that the difficulties in accessing health professionals could put endanger your health or that of others. their loved ones”.

To compensate for this lack of health professionals in places, French respondents are overwhelmingly in favor of expanding the missions of this profession: they recommend letting nurses prescribe painkillers (84%) or renewing prescriptions for long-term conditions (81%). %).

For this reason, ONI calls on the government to complete the reform of the decree that regulates nursing competencies, a promise by Olivier Véran.
