Bronchiolitis: visits to the emergency room and hospitalizations rise again after the holidays

After the school holidays that coincided with a decrease in severe cases of bronchiolitis in children under two years of age, the figures have risen again and continue to reach very high levels.

Numbers on the rise again. The number of visits to the emergency room and hospitalizations of children for cases of bronchiolitis increased again during the week of November 14 to 20, after the decrease observed during the school holidays. Current levels remain particularly high.

According to figures from Santé Publique France, 6,882 children under the age of two went to the emergency room this week and 90% of them were under one year of age. 2,552 children under the age of two were hospitalized, and 94% of them had less than one. These numbers are up about 25% from the previous week.

So ER visits are back to a slightly lower level than before the school holidays, but hospitalizations are on the rise.

A still tense situation

For the third week in a row, hospitalizations for bronchiolitis account for half of hospitalizations after an emergency room visit in children under two years of age, reports Public Health France.

On November 9, the Minister of Health, François Braun, announced the implementation of the ORSAN plan in hospitals, paving the way for specific arrangements for establishments. The Mulhouse hospital launched the white plan on Tuesday, thus giving itself the possibility of mobilizing all staff and deprogramming operations.

The intensity of the disease remains particularly marked throughout mainland France and Guadeloupe, with the status of “epidemic alert”.
