Precido from adolescents, nicotine sachets will be prohibited in France in March 2026, as well as marbles and nicotine gums. A decision made by the Government due to the increase in poisoning related to the use of these “Pacnops”.
Products with a high addictive character
For several years, nicotine sachets have invited many teenagers to everyday life. Made of permeable fabric, they do not contain tobacco, but fibers of nicotine polymers. They are placed inside the mouth, between the lips and the rubber.
In 2023, Anses explained that the Anti -Poison center had alerted it after observing a clear increase in calls on the use of these sachets since 2021.
A study made it possible to identify that most of the exposed people were between 12 and 17 years old. Anses then asked “special attention” to these products due to the toxicity of the nicotine contained in these sachets and their addictive character.
Loïc Josseran, president of the alliance against tobacco, also a doctor and researcher, alerts the consequences of its use.
“They are abrasive. This will eliminate the upper layer of the mucosa and damage the rubber, which can cause dental problems. We will lose the teeth and see Ent cancers, which is catastrophic,” he explains to BFMTV.
A bad “business” for health
It is the threat of this unit that first causes concerns. Although young people consume less tobacco, they handle other products.
“We are starting to have a little perspective and for young people who are not informed, you can go very fast. I think this product has nothing to do in the hands of minors,” says Camel Guellelloul, Apica Chief (Prevention Association and Information on Addictive Behaviors).
A bill had been presented in 2023 to prohibit use useless oral use formed by nicotine, including these nicotine sachets. In the fall of 2024, the government announced its willingness to prohibit them.
The publication of the decree that formalizes its imminent prohibition is a “victory” for the alliance against tobacco. “This is a crucial measure to protect young people and counteract the pernicious strategies of an industry that thrives in the addiction market, to the detriment of public health,” he said in a statement.
For its part, Loïc Josseran denounces a product whose sole objective is to “bring young people to smoke” and “keep the elderly, who think he is less harmful, in his dependence.”
Camel Guelleul also talks about a harmful market, far from the interest of consumers. “It is a product that is established to get used to young people to consume. There, I think that selling this type of product is also mainly doing business,” he concludes.
Arsenic, lead or sweeteners
In addition to the nicotine present in these products, the other components concern the authorities. In a study of 60 million consumers published on December 10, 2024, the scientists highlighted the presence of arsenic in all the products they have analyzed. In some pounds there was also lead, antimony, chromium, molybdenum, but also sweeteners.
These products have also led to numerous poisoning, according to the ANSES report of 2023. Between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2022, “295 calls on voluntary or accidental consumption of tobacco heating, chewing tobacco, snus, nicotine sachetts and aromatic balls, received by the antiposon centers.
The calls in question in particular aromatic balls, these products that can be inserted “in the filter to modify the aroma of the cigarette smoke.” They represented 138 and 295 calls and the appellants especially sought to obtain information after accidental ingestion, particularly by children. “Three quarters of the presentations were mainly from one to three years,” Anses said.
In addition, “acute nicotine syndromes were observed in this study in adolescents that consumed, sometimes in the school environment” of nicotine bags. These are symptoms such as palpitations, a sense of discomfort, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or tremors.
These increases, increasing, are also one of the reasons why these products will soon be prohibited.
