The number of voluntary interruptions of pregnancy (abortion) continued to increase in 2024, and 40% was practiced in a liberal office, said Drees (Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics) in a study published this Thursday, September 25.
A total of 251,270 abortions took place in France, 7,000 more than in 2023, specify the statistical service of social ministries. “The increase in the abortion number observed in 2022 and 2023 continues, after the hole observed in 2020 and 2021, in particular due to the decrease in the conceptions observed during the Covid-19 Pandemia,” says the DREES.
The relationship between the abortion number and the number of living births for a given year increases: “It reaches 0.38 due to the fall in births and the increase in the abortion number”, against 0.28 in 2016, according to the DREES.
The use of greater abortion among children aged 25 to 29
In 2024, the abortion appeal rate continues to increase to 17.3 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 49, against 16.8 per 1,000 in 2023. It is the highest in 25-29 years, with 29.8 abortions per thousand women. It is lower for those under 20 years ago (5.5 per thousand against 8.7).
The abortion appeal rate is twice higher in foreign departments and regions in continental France. 21,514 women who used to abort in 2024 had already had an abortion in the previous twelve, the DREES points out.
In 2024, 45% of abortions were carried out outside health establishments. The drug method is used for 80% of abortion.
The recent practice of abortion by liberal midwives has developed a lot. In 2024, they did half of abortion in the city. 1,442 midwives and 1,820 doctors practiced him in a liberal cabinet last year.
Abortion in teleconsultation remains weird: a pharmacy gave women directly to women. The extension of two weeks (from 12 to 14) of the legal period of appeal, provided for in the Law of March 2022, which referred to only 1 to 2% of the total abortion.
