Legionellosis: a new home detected in Savoy, the boarding school of a closed high school for a month

Since mid -September, the number of cases of legionellosis detected has been exploited in the department of Savoy. Two deaths were identified at the same time in Haute-Saône.

In Savoy, the number of legionellosis cases worries the authorities. In the commune of Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne, the internship of the Lycée Paul Hérult closed “to the autumn holidays,” said the Grenoble Academy in a statement by transmitting a decision of the Regional Health Authority (ARS).

This measure to “guarantee the safety of the students and the staff” was taken after “regulatory analysis carried out in the water of the boarding school” that reveals “the presence of a higher legionel rate than the reference thresholds.”

“Three internal students currently have light symptoms,” said the academy and “has an attentive medical follow -up.”

Cluster in Albertville

The number of cases of legionellosis detected in the Albertville sector since mid -September is at least 45 after the confirmation of 28 new cases, Savoy’s prefecture said Wednesday night at a situation point.

Among these 45 confirmed cases, “8 were hospitalized in the resuscitation service, 6 of which are still,” said the Prefecture and the Regional Health Agency (ARS) in a statement. On Tuesday, a first evaluation of this “group” reported on the death of a hospitalized patient.

Legionellosis is a disease that affects lung. It is caused by a bacteria, the legionelle. Contamination is performed by inhalation of water micro-drips contaminated by the bacteria.

The disease, which essentially affects adults, can be serious in immunocompromised people, diseases, chronic respiratory pathologies, diabetics or even smokers.

In Auverne-Rhône-Alpes, they declare between 200 and 400 cases of legionxas every year in Ars, and more than 300 cases were in 2024, including 14 in Savoy, said the ARS. The disease is fatal in about 10% of cases.
