The peak of the bronchiolitis epidemic is expected “towards the end of the week”, the union of liberal pediatricians said on Monday, calling for a reinforcement of barrier gestures to counteract this generally benign disease but which can be serious in newborns. born.
“It’s going up, we expect the peak towards the end of the week,” said Dr. Brigitte Virey, president of the French National Union of Pediatrics (SNPF), who evokes “a substantial workload in the offices.”
“We have increased our consultation ranges to be able to supply and take everyone,” even on Sundays, added the head of the union, established with some 2,600 pediatricians in the city.
A situation that is all the more worrying as it “will last” and could be combined with other epidemics, such as influenza and gastroenteritis, emphasizes Dr. Virey.
“Extremely tense” situation
Ventilation of the premises, hand washing, use of a mask when approaching a newborn, limitation of frequenting public places with a small child… “We must resume barrier measures, it is essential to protect babies”, hammered the pediatrician .
Professor Rémi Salomon, from the Necker hospital in Paris, made the same appeal on Sunday night, given the “extremely tense situation in the emergency and pediatric departments”:
“You should do everything you can to avoid bronchiolitis, it’s really super important!”
In this context, the SNPF did not join the strike called Thursday and Friday by various organizations of liberal doctors to obtain an increase in consultation rates.
