“It had no impact”: Christiane, on a respirator, has already experienced power outages

This sixty-year-old, a member of the Santé Respiratoire France association, has several solutions at her disposal in case of power outages this winter.

Don’t worry about Christiane. Although power outages could occur in the coming months and Enedis does not consider high-risk patients a priority, this 60-year-old suffering from respiratory failure does not panic.

However, his breathing apparatus, which has been with him for six years, only works if it is plugged into the mains: in the event of a power outage, it is impossible to use it. But don’t be scared, Christiane has several plans B.

Various backup plans planned

“I have two emergency solutions. The first is my nomad concentrator: it’s the one I take with me when I go out, because during exercise I need oxygen all the time. It contains a battery that has four hours of autonomy”, explains one who is also a member of the Santé Respiratory France association.

Christiane also has an oxygen pump, with twelve hours of autonomy. If her emergency devices are well charged, the risk of running out of oxygen is limited for Christiane, especially since the cuts will be limited in time and announced well in advance to organize.

Above all, this situation is far from unprecedented for this sixty-year-old woman, who says she has already experienced power outages during severe weather conditions.

“It had absolutely no impact on my oxygen management and health,” she says.

Enedis in conjunction with the ARS

However, several patients and their families have worried in recent days about possible future cuts. Enedis has planned a protocol for the 4,000 patients at high risk of life in France. The distributor collaborates with the Regional Health Agencies that provide it with the list of patients who require an organization plan that guarantees their safety in the event of a power outage, foreseeable or not.

But the responsibility lies with the patients. “To be identified by Enedis as a priority customer and have specific support measures, you must first make yourself known to the DDASS or the ARS,” We can read on the distributor’s website.
