“It can still do a lot of damage”: the appeal trial of a controversial naturopath opens this Thursday

Miguel Barthéléry is tried for illegal practice of medicine. Convicted at first instance in October 2021, he appealed the decision and was able to continue with his consultations.

This Thursday is an important day for Camille (first name has been changed). This afternoon she should open the appeal trial of the naturopath Miguel Barthéléry. He is being tried for the illegal practice of medicine after the death of two people with cancer, including Camille’s partner.

Paul (his first name has been changed) was 41 years old when he died of testicular cancer in December 2018. He was treated by Miguel Barthéléry, who recommended that he not undergo chemotherapy but rather follow a plan based on “purges, juices and fasting”. , according to Camille’s testimony to Parisian.

“Too Hard, Too Horrible”

The latter believes that the naturopath encouraged Paul to deviate from traditional medicine. Today, he wants “no one else to be able to live this again.”

“What I went through was too hard, too horrible. Seeing someone so diminished at 41 is not possible,” he explains.

She reported these events to the Paris prosecutor’s office in February 2019, leading to the opening of an investigation. A procedure in the form of catharsis.

“I decided to file a complaint right after my husband’s death, despite the feelings of shame and guilt that washed over me because I had failed to divert him from his naturopath,” she continues.

In October 2021, Miguel Barthéléry was convicted of usurpation of the quality of doctor and illegal practice of medicine and was sentenced to two years in prison suspended with a definitive ban on practicing as a naturopath, magnetizer or dowser. But he appealed the decision, which suspends the execution of the sentence. Therefore, he was able to continue to consult as a naturopath.

“It is indecent, if we consider that it is dangerous to the point of prohibiting him from working, I do not understand why the judge has not also requested a provisional execution,” Camille declared Thursday in the Parisian.

Teleconsultations from Morocco

But even if he is sentenced again, “he will be able to follow his consultations in parallel from Morocco since he was already following us only by video”, estimated one of his current clients with the Parisian.

“Je ne sais pas s’il ya una solution pour que la justice lors de l’audience en appel ait encore une prize sur lui vu qu’il sera désormais à l’étranger et qu’il y déplace son activité”, dénonce Camilla .

“Teleconsultations from Morocco can still do a lot of damage to patients in France,” he judges.

In October 2021, the Paris Criminal Court determined in particular that Miguel Barthéléry had voluntarily maintained the confusion about his diplomas, by presenting himself as a doctor on the Internet and in text exchanges with the two victims, the family of a Belgian physiotherapist, who died of uterine cancer at age 39, was added to the file opened after Camille’s complaint.
