Covid-19: vaccination increases again as Christmas approaches

The authorities were concerned about the relaxation of the French as the ninth wave of Covid-19 in the population progresses, at the same time as the cases of bronchiolitis and influenza. But since the beginning of December, there has been a significant recovery in the number of injections.

The French have had time to learn about life in the time of Covid-19 during the previous eight waves, and with habituation comes relaxation or even relaxation. Given the increase in infections and hospitalizations, the authorities have drawn up their recommendations for the return of barrier gestures, for the use of masks in closed and crowded places, but also to pressure the French to get vaccinated or revaccinated.

It seems that the message has penetrated because vaccination is experiencing a new -and significant- increase on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, according to the latest figures from the French Public Health agency.

new boom

The graph is eloquent. In the last days of November, the figures for the fourth dose stabilized at around 25,000 bites per day. In addition, between 2,500 and 2,900 third injections were performed. The primary inoculations and the first booster dose did not exceed 500 daily.

The table for Wednesday, December 7, the most recent date that Santé Publique France was able to compile its data, is quite different. 43,995 fourth doses were registered, to which are added 4076 third doses, 485 second doses and 411 primary injections. The change took place around November 28 with the start of escalation.

Examination of accumulations confirms the trend. In total, there were 83,727 bites on December 6, compared to 61,301 the following day. The average, read during the previous seven days, gives 48,966 daily injections. They were only 44,912 on November 25 and a weekly average of 28,235 per day.

Santé Publique France also tells us that 40.8 million French have completed their primary vaccination and satisfied a booster dose – that is, 60.2% of the general population – and we increase to 54.6 million if we count all the French who donated their deltoids to at least one dose Finally, 82.8% of people aged 65 and over completed their first vaccination and supplemented it with a memory.

It must be said that these elderly people, as well as other groups that are especially vulnerable in terms of their health, are the first to be affected by the judicial campaign around a fourth inoculation.

Political intervention, the Christmas season

The first, but not the only ones, however, stressed the Minister of Health, François Braun, on BFMTV this Friday: “Vaccination is not reserved for people at risk, for those over 60 (…) But the objective, even if the term is not very good, they are the most fragile.”

Precisely the intervention of politicians has been able to play its role in this net increase in vaccinations after months of sleep. It seems that the shelters have boosted the injections. If Emmanuel Macron was relatively discreet on the matter -appearing instead with a mask during a trip to Vienna on Thursday-, François Braun insisted this Friday: “Everyone can get vaccinated.” He illustrated, deeming it “completely normal” to get vaccinated “if you’re going to see your elderly parents during the holidays.”

The words of the Minister of Health echoed the statements of the Prime Minister two days ago on RTL. “If you go to your pharmacist and say: ‘I’m going to see my grandmother during the holidays’, you have free access to the vaccine. Everyone has to go, you have to be aware of fragile people getting vaccinated if you have to go see your family during the holidays”, launched Elisabeth Borne.

The perspective of the holidays is, in fact, the best pedagogy in this matter. In any case, this is the opinion of this pharmacist interviewed by France Bleu: “We feel in recent days that people want to take advantage of the holidays and have understood the usefulness of the vaccine.” Awareness that does not prevent a certain margin of progress: still according to Public Health France, 19.5% of the French are not vaccinated, neither near nor far.
