The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that he was “very concerned” about the health situation in China, in relation to the Covid-19 epidemic.

In early December, Beijing abruptly lifted numerous health restriction measures, in the face of a protest movement unprecedented since 1989. Chinese who test positive are no longer required to isolate themselves in closed quarantine centers.

“WHO is very concerned about the development of the situation in China (…). In order to carry out a full risk assessment of the situation, WHO needs more detailed information on the severity of the disease, hospital admissions and the intensive care unit. needs,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at his weekly press conference.

This abrupt change in health policy was accompanied by an explosion of cases. Thus, many testimonies shared on social networks and in the media have denounced overloaded hospitals, forced to leave patients on the floor with respiratory assistance, but also crematoria running at full speed.

In Beijing, stadiums have been transformed into makeshift hospitals to cope with mounting hospital pressure.
