Covid-19: French remain cautious even if vigilance drops as Christmas approaches

A Public Health France survey shows that a quarter of the French will respect barrier gestures less than during the last year-end celebrations.

The practice of barrier gestures is eroding in France as Christmas approaches. This Thursday, Public Health France (SPF) reveals in its CoviPrev survey from December 5 to 12 that 26% of the French are preparing to respect less barrier gestures for the holidays. Only 12% expressed themselves in this direction in the same period in 2021.

However, the epidemic context was not exactly the same. As a reminder, the emergence of the Omicron variant had forced the government at the time to implement drastic sanitary measures, such as the closure of bars or a limit of 10 people vaccinated around the table at Christmas.

Again this year, the French are preparing to limit contact with family members. 58% of those surveyed said they wanted to celebrate Christmas with 6 people or less. A figure that rose to 61% in 2021 and 83% in 2020.

The importance of discipline

After several consecutive months of decline, SPF noted for the first time since February 2022, a stabilization in the systematic adoption of wearing a mask in public, greeting without shaking hands, avoiding gatherings, as well as an increase in regular hand washing. .

If vigilance appears to be waning, while the 9th wave is on the decline, respondents continue to take the disease seriously if they do contract it. Thus, when a detection test is carried out and it is positive, 94% of the French comply with the current isolation regulations.

Since March 23, 2020, Public Health France, together with the BVA survey institute, has been conducting the CoviPrev survey to monitor the evolution of mental health and the adoption of preventive behaviors in the context of the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic. For each wave of surveys, a nationally representative sample of 2,000 people over the age of 18 are interviewed via the Internet.
