Over the past week, the circulation of Covid-19 has continued to decline across the country, resulting in fewer hospitalizations, figures from health authorities showed on Thursday.
This slowdown affected all age groups and metropolitan regions, the French public health agency said in a bulletin posted on its site.
Last week a daily average of 40,841 cases were confirmed compared to more than 49,000 the previous week.
At the hospital level, a decline in the indicators began after several weeks of increases. The number of new admissions remains “at a high level (more than 7,000 new admitted patients)”, but drops 26% compared to the previous week.
Admissions to intensive care units were also down (to 626, a 25% decrease).
Tense context of “triple epidemic”
This decrease, however, is part of a “triple epidemic” context, which is putting the health system to the test. Covid-19, in fact, joins the flu, whose epidemic affects all regions of mainland France and overseas, and bronchiolitis, which remains at “high levels”.
Health Minister François Braun also spoke on Wednesday of a “week of all dangers” for the health system.
The health organization therefore reiterated its calls for flu and anti-Covid vaccination of people at risk, especially the elderly, and respect for gestures such as the use of a mask in closed and frequented places.
As of December 26, only 20.3% of people ages 60 to 79 and 22.3% of people age 80 and older among eligible people (depending on the time since their last injection) had received a booster dose adapted to the Omicron variant.
