Shortage of medicines: Brigitte Autran, president of Covars, says that “there is a problem with paracetamol”

With the exceptional outbreak of Covid-19 cases in China, the country, the main exporter of paracetamol, could reserve its medicines for its population.

“An epidemic of terrible magnitude.” Brigitte Autran, president of the Health Risk Monitoring and Anticipation Committee (Covars), confirmed that, in the context of the explosion of Covid-19 infections in China, “there is a paracetamol problem in France.”

Many medicines, including paracetamol, are manufactured in Chinese factories and some of them have stopped exports and reserved – at the request of Beijing, according to various media such as RTL – their medicines for Chinese patients.

A European reaction?

According to Brigitte Autran, the supply difficulties are not felt only in France, but “in all of Europe”.

“I hope that all the measures that are being developed in Europe to try to become independent become effective,” said the president of Covars, the former Scientific Council.

Although the President of the Republic has decided to “install paracetamol factories in France”, these will not see the light of day until 2024-2025, added the immunologist.
