Why the return of the cold is good news for allergy sufferers

With the return of the cold, the growth of vegetation will slow down and the pollen that causes allergic reactions will stop spreading.

After milder temperatures than normal for the season, winter weather is arriving in France and negative temperatures are expected this week. And this return of the cold is good news for allergy sufferers.

“It will neutralize the pollination of the trees and will relieve those allergic to pollen,” explains Pascale Couratier, director of the French Association for the Prevention of Allergies, on BFMTV.

With the mild temperatures, “we see that the trees sprout and at the same time begin to release pollen, which is abnormal at this time of year,” explains Édouard Seve, an allergist and vice president of the allergists’ union. .

“From Christmas we began to have a little bit of that”

Indeed, the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network has been pointing out for a week in its forecasts a high rate of hazel pollen in the Grand Est region.

“We are almost a month ahead of the pollens: generally the first pollens, especially the hazelnut, start around February, and there from Christmas we start to have a little”, says Édouard Seve.

But the cold will “allow the vegetation to slow down, the buds will develop less” and the pollen will stop spreading, explains Philippe Gaillard, cider apple arborist in Sommervieu (Calvados). He is also delighted because “it could prevent future spring frosts on the flowers” and thus reduce his yields.

The allergist highlights having “the impression that from year to year [les allergies] happen earlier and last longer”.
