Vaccine obligations for caregivers: HAS to issue new recommendations in March and July

The High Health Authority will deal in particular with the relevance of maintaining the obligation to vaccinate against Covid-19 for caregivers “in view of the evolution of the epidemiological situation and medical and scientific knowledge”.

The High Health Authority (HAS) will make new recommendations in March and July on the vaccination obligations of caregivers, including in relation to Covid-19, it announced on Wednesday.

Entrusted by the General Directorate of Health with updating all the recommendations related to vaccination obligations and recommendations for professionals, the HAS will first evaluate in March “the relevance of modifying the current vaccination obligations regarding diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and hepatitis B”.

The issue of unvaccinated suspended caregivers dealt with by the CCNE

It will also address, in this first part, the relevance of maintaining the obligation to vaccinate against Covid-19 for caregivers “in view of the evolution of the epidemiological situation and medical and scientific knowledge”.

HAS aims to update knowledge about the frequency of occurrence of these diseases.

It will then study “the impact of the different possible measures (application, suspension or maintenance of a vaccination obligation) on vaccination coverage, on the incidence of infections contracted by professionals in the exercise of their work and among their dependents and on the absenteeism of the affected professionals”.

Their work will be carried out in parallel to that of the National Ethics Council (CCNE), which must also rule on the situation of caregivers suspended after refusing to be vaccinated against Covid.

A public consultation will be organized soon

The question of the reintegration of unvaccinated caregivers has been controversial since the vaccination obligation for health personnel was imposed in September 2021. In November, President Emmanuel Macron estimated that their return to hospital should be a “scientifically established” decision “, “not a political choice.”

Next July, the HAS will evaluate the currently recommended vaccines for students and professionals in the health sector, against whooping cough, influenza, hepatitis A, measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox.

As part of the first part of its work, “HAS will very soon organize the public consultation to present its draft recommendation to interested parties,” he announced.

In order to “collect as broadly as possible the opinion of the main actors concerned about the issue”, an online questionnaire will be available between February 17 and March 3.
