Nearly half of metropolitan France on red alert for grass pollen

In the space of a week, 26 more metropolitan departments were placed in “high health impact forecast.”

Pollens hide others. While allergy sufferers thought they were out of the woods with the end of birch pollen, now it’s grass pollen that comes into play.

According to the latest update of the National Aerobiological Surveillance Network (RNSA) site, almost half of the country -44 of the 96 metropolitan departments, or 26 more than last year- is now located in red, synonymous with ” high prognostic impact on health”. ” regarding these pollens.

Geographically, the departments in question are located in the central part of the country, the southwest, but also around the Mediterranean. Please note that all areas located in the red zone are also affected by persistent oak pollen.

As for the rest of the country, it is placed in yellow, so a medium health impact is expected.

Pollen getting earlier

According to the RNSA, it is the “warm, sunny and windy” days that favor the movement of grass pollen, which can sometimes travel tens of kilometers from the pollination site.

“Only the rare thunderstorm showers can give allergy sufferers temporary respite,” it says.

It is also remembered that these “are the herbaceous plants that we see growing along the roads, in the fields and sometimes even in roundabouts.”

With the blooming earlier and earlier, seasonal allergies worsen. In 2023, an estimated 30% of the population suffers from allergies, and this could rise to 50% in 2050.
