PS changes rents, relaxes measures in AL and withdraws from forced letting

Local housing, forced rental of vacant premises, renting – the final version of the “More housing” program promises to end with several changes from the government’s original proposal. Forced lease becomes “exceptional”

The PS proposals also include changes to one of the most controversial points of ‘Meer Wonen’, the forced letting of vacant properties, which is now taking on an exceptional character. According to the socialist proposal municipalities can “exceptionally and additionally proceed to forced letting of the property”, if this “turns out to be necessary to guarantee the social function of housing” provided for in the Basic Housing Act. According to Eurico Brilhante Dias, the amendment aims to “emphasize that the nature of forced leasing is clearly exceptional and is essentially based on the social function of housing, in fact as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic”. It should be recalled that the forced rental of vacant premises was approved on several occasions by the President of the Republic, who expressed doubts about the constitutionality of this measure.
