PCP wants the government to guarantee housing that is open during exams

The PCP is submitting a draft resolution to parliament this Thursday to recommend that the government guarantee more beds in university residences for students during exam season. This is because, the communists state in the diploma, in addition to the lack of beds during school hours, many homes close after the end of classes.

“In those where students can stay until the end of July, the last monthly fee must already be paid in full, or else students will have to pay a daily fee, which in some cases can reach 20 euros,” the PCP states.

Therefore, “it makes no sense to close the residences while the student is still studyingleaving those who live in it with no choice but to return home or rent in the private sector”, defend the deputies. According to the text of the draft resolution, this situation is even more serious in the current context, of “the deterioration of the economic situation of many families, with the palpable increase in the cost of living, without the corresponding increase in income, and with the speculative prices in the housing market”.

In addition, the communists also point out that there are several residences that will close in the next school year, in order to intervene with funds from the PRR. “Whatever the solution, it is important to ensure that students are not harmed and are well supportedas a complement to accommodation both at home and away from home,” the text prompts.

Essentially, the draft resolution “is designed to allow scholarship students housed in public housing to remain in their homes for as long as they need it” due to academic acts, such as exams or internships, for example. In addition, the PCP also considers “that the payment of the accommodation allowance should be matched with the stated need, guaranteeing the social support of the student in the payment of the monthly fee while effectively studyingand this measure should be applied to all students who have received a living allowance, regardless of whether they are in residence or not”

Since “the state is directly responsible for education”, the PCP therefore asks the government, on the one hand, for both the permanent conditions for “scholarship students” during exams or equivalent, as well as, “payment of the housing allowance to all students to whom it is allocated while they are engaged in academic activities such as evaluation tests and internships”.
