PCP Secretary General Paulo Raimundo said this Saturday he was not concerned about the possible departure of the Portuguese Prime Minister to chair the European Council, but rather about the problems of those living and working in Portugal.
“I don’t underestimate the importance of places, but what does that mean for people’s lives?” Paulo Raimundo remarked when asked by journalists about news that António Costa could be a candidate for the presidency of the European Council.
On the sidelines of a social lunch held by the PCP’s Regional Organization Directorate, the PCP’s secretary-general said he was not concerned about the possible departure of the Portuguese prime minister, but rather the “problems of those who live and work here”.
“It’s the wages, the rise in the cost of living, the health problems that never stop, the housing problems we face (…) The government has all the tools and what serves the least we waste time when it’s early , if it’s late, whether you go or not, what does that mean for people’s lives?” he added.
During his speech, the PCP’s secretary general criticized the alignment of the PS, PSD, Liberal Initiative and Chega in “defending the interests of economic groups”.
“We know very well that they are not all the same, but when it comes to defending the interests of economic groups (…) they all line up like stars to respond to those interests,” he said , saying that the economy is growing, but “goes to the side of those who work and have worked”.
For the Secretary General of the PCP, the growth of the national economy is only “filling the pockets of a small minority” and not that of workers, pensioners and youth.
“We want an increase in the economy that translates into an increase in wages, reforms and rights,” he defended.
In addition to the interests of economic groups, Paulo Raimundo also criticized banking and real estate funds, which he said were “responsible” for Portugal’s housing problem.
