Interior Minister José Luís Carneiro defended this Sunday that it is necessary to carefully consider the decriminalization of drugs, after the Socialist Party introduced a bill that defends the decriminalization of possession of synthetic drugs for consumption.
“What is essentially the essence of the advice given by the Ministry of the Interior is that very great weight should be given to the wording which modifies the already foreseen and consolidated recitals in the law. I believe that it still be possible to improve the conditions under which such changes can be made,” the official said in a statement to journalists in Penafiel.
The PS proposal, which will be discussed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, provides for the decriminalization of the possession of synthetic drugs for consumption, regardless of the quantity. The aim is to make it clear that human trafficking is a crime, but consumption is not.
“What the security forces see on the ground is that drug dealers often use drug addicts and hand them out small amounts, but when associated they form larger dimensions,” said the minister, quoted by TSF.
