MP Renaissance Belkhir Belhaddad Files Racist Slur Complaint

The deputy was the target of racist insults posted on Facebook the day after his re-election last June. He denounces “hateful” comments and asks that they be deleted.

The Renaissance MP (ex-LREM) for the first Moselle constituency, Belkhir Belhaddad, announced on Monday that he had filed a complaint on July 28 for racist insults, after being subjected to insults on Facebook the day after his re-election in June. .

“These hateful and racist comments deserve a clear and strong response from our justice system,” Belkhir Belhaddad told a news conference.

He assured that for him it was “important” “not to let more things pass.”

“violent” comments

Belkhir Belhaddad was first elected as a deputy in 2017 when he represented the PS. The day after his re-election, his campaign team detected a Facebook post that made “violent” racist comments towards the deputy, coming from a Facebook account of an identified person, said his lawyer, Me Xavier. Yochum.

“This is the object of our complaint for public insult against a person responsible for a public mandate,” added the council, specifying that these acts were punishable by one year in prison and a 45,000-euro fine.

The comments of the person who is the subject of the complaint are still publicly online on his Facebook account, as are the racist insults towards the France team and Kylian Mbappé or the insults towards Brigitte Macron.

Comments still online

“We see that almost daily, a person on Facebook can make racist comments and call for violence without anything happening,” denounced Me Iochum, criticizing the platform’s inaction despite having denounced the offending post.

A complaint shared by Belkhir Belhaddad: he wants the platforms to “delete these comments faster, without the need to make a report.”

The Renaissance MP also noted that he had refused to play alongside the elected RNs during a charity match for the National Assembly football team last week, refusing to “wear the same shirt as the preachers of hate”.
