“I will only rule Portugal if I win the elections. I will only rule if I have the confidence of the people.
Montenegro responded to the PS/Azores saying in a statement released Monday that the PSD president “either has no memory or is not ashamed” of his defense that the PP should form a government in Spain because it won elections, recalling what happened in the 2020 regional elections.
“If it were not worrying, it would be anecdotal,” said the national leader, pointing out that it is “a political party, with its regional structure, that has come to criticize the position of the leader of the PSD”.
Luis Montenegro responded to the PS/Azores, emphasizing respect for “the autonomy of the regions in speech and practice”.
“What is discussed and decided in the regions is, from the point of view of autonomy, the responsibility of those who politically govern the regions. But I am not proposing to become president of the regional government. I am proposing to become Prime Minister of Portugal,” he stressed.
Montenegro also asked the PS/Azores whether it remembers “what happened in 2015, not from a regional point of view, but nationally, where the PS did the exact opposite of what the regional structure is now criticizing”.
“The election campaign in the Azores is next year. The PS used the arm of the Azores to criticize the position of the PSD leader,” he stressed.
The Social Democratic leader assured that he was “very calm about it and even very happy”, emphasizing that it gives him the opportunity to say that he is “for regional autonomy and the PS is not”.
“I am for a national political force that is inspired by the confidence of the Portuguese people, that respects the essential democratic values, that determines who has the confidence of the people. It is the prime minister who is the leader of the party with the most votes,” he argued.
“This is how I will present myself to the Portuguese, without lukewarmness, without ambiguity, to win the elections and get terms of government,” he underlined.
