Carlos Moedas defends daring against the ‘tax yoke’

The mayor of Lisbon today recalled the brutality of the republicans who implemented this regime in Portugal 112 years ago to defend a country that is liberating the Portuguese from the “tax yoke that has become unbearable”.

Carlos Moedas spoke at the solemn session of the ceremonies on October 5, which will take place in Lisbon City Hall, in his first speech as Mayor of Lisbon since last year, despite having already been elected, he had not yet taken office.

“Faced with the perils of this world, in which war has returned to Europe and in which the spiral of inflation is hitting especially the most vulnerable, the will for change that the nation has shown at equally critical times in the past is an inspiration to all of us, not to give in to resignation, passivity and discouragement,” he said.

According to Moedas, “the challenges facing the country require courage, not resignation”.

“We cannot resign ourselves to some kind of economic stagnation,” he said, defending: “We increasingly want a country that is prepared for an increasingly competitive world; a country that frees the Portuguese from the tax yoke that puts their lives on hold. becomes unbearable”.

The action advocated by the mayor mainly concerns being able to make decisions in the areas of care, education, energy transition and housing.

And this action, he continued, “when it cannot come from the central state, it must be taken over by the municipalities, which have the most direct political responsibility over the citizens”.

In this regard, he recalled: “Incidentally, this was also the municipalist tradition that inspired so many figures, Republicans and non-Republicans, during the moments of institutional, social and moral anguish of the late 19th century and early 20th century “.

The daring of those who led to the raising of the flag of the Portuguese Republic more than a century ago was remembered several times by Carlos Moedas, for whom daring is all it takes.

“Dare to make politics for the people, with the people, listening to the people. And not to have a policy of imposing on people what politicians think their lives should be.”

“We need that courage to overcome stagnation, defend freedom and protect democracy every day,” he said.
